Traditional Bengali/Indian Wedding
June 7, 2011
I just had the most fun doing the Make-up and Hair for Debleena and Miki's Wedding this past weekend! They had a traditional Indian/Bengali ceremony at the beautiful "The Manor" in NJ.Like all traditional weddings, we did two very colorful and bold make-up/hairstyles inspired by the colors of Debleena's beautiful Bridal Saris. I love all the special accessories that are part of the tradition, like the tikka, the aloka, all the beautiful gold jewelry and bangles, and the traditional white and red flowers that go on the bride's hair! The ceremony was really interesting, and it amazes me how intricate it is, full of symbolism: the groom arrives in a car decorated with flowers (in some other regions it's by horse or elephant!) to greet the bride's family. The bride is carried on a piri (wooden platform) by her brothers and cousins when she is "presented" to the groom, the couple walks around a fire pit 3 times "chanting prayers for prosperity and strength", they take 7 steps together which symbolize "the beginning of their journey through life as partners", they say their vows to each other, and the bride moves to the left of the groom "to be closer to the groom's heart". It's a detailed and beautiful ceremony, and I felt honored to be part of a tradition that has been performed for centuries!Congratulations and the Best Wishes to this lovely couple!!!
